Lara Matana

The Brazilian artist Lara Matana has taken on a challenge that goes beyond the horizons that the human eye can capture. She has created a unique signature in the history of Brazilian contemporary art. The artist uses discarded logs and wood, or fallen trees, as she believes in the duty of environmental awareness in favor of sustainability. Her gaze is not oblivious to the rubble, remains of rafters, slats, blades and stumps, left over time.

The diversity of the production of her works comes exactly from the non-symmetry of the wood scraps used to create them. Her works present very particular optical and playful movements, rarely found in other wooden works.

Each set of works constitutes a “series”, which, in turn, interprets how Lara sees the cosmos, or the relationship between human beings and their religiosity. The “Optical Series”, for example, comes from the perception of how light propagates in the universe and how we see these geometric fragments. In turn, the “Fractal Series”

was born from the artist's inspiration, through her perception of the breadth that permeates the universe. Other series portray the artist's view of man's relationship with his creator and his religious beliefs, the evolution of human beings and their steps towards self-knowledge.

Her works are unique, and due to their complexity, they need some time to be produced. They are never identical to each other, even if they are part of the same “series”, and they always provide a surprise to those who want and order them.

"What I realize is that the possibilities that wood has shown me every day are incredible and endless, and it always fascinates me.”
