Jota Azevedo

José Edson Azevedo Filho, known in Brazil as “Jota Azevedo”, was born in May 1978 in the city of Recife. His first steps in what is now his art, began when he was a child, repairing and reassembling broken toys. “My art is the evolution of my childhood project”, says Jota Azevedo.

As he was 5 years old, the “little Jota” used to watch his cousin drawing superheroes, and because that, he also ventured into this artistic segment. He dreamed of being a cartoonist for comic books, but as he became a teenager, he had to help his mother as a clerk in a small business and didn’t have time to take courses in the area. However, he used to take the short span of time between a costumer and another one, to create his works.

And it was precisely in his adolescence that he started to model porcelain, and started to use some residues, discards, to create the molds for the pieces. But little by little he realized then, he could create characters using only these discards and residues.

At the age of 25, he started working for a company as a product designer, and again, he came across discards and residues, using

them in parallel to create his works. Broken printers, empty ink cartridges, mouses, wires, everything that for others was garbage, for him, was raw material. Step by step, his art became known, invitations to participate in exhibitions began to arrive, and he soon achieved international recognition as a sustainable artist. Jota Azevedo has already developed work for international companies, such as Red Bull and Siemens, and today, together with other artists, he supports the “Galeria Esquina 40” foundation, which helps young low-income artists to continue with their studies..

"If literature is the main source of inspiration, it is in Brazilianness that it finds the ideal raw material."
